What is environmental justice?

Environmental justice refers to the fair treatment and involvement of all individuals in environmental decision-making processes, ensuring that no demographic group, particularly marginalized communities, faces a disproportionate burden of environmental hazards or lacks equal access to environmental benefits. This concept emphasizes that everyone, regardless of race, income, or nationality, should have the same degree of protection from environmental harm as well as equal opportunities to participate in the creation and implementation of environmental laws and policies.

This principle is crucial for promoting equity, as historically, certain communities have been unjustly affected by environmental degradation due to systemic inequalities. Environmental justice seeks to address these injustices by advocating for policy changes that consider the needs and rights of all people, ensuring that everyone has a voice in matters that impact their surroundings and health.

The other choices do not capture the full scope of what environmental justice is. Simply ensuring equal habitats for all species overlooks the human aspect and complexities of social justice. A movement solely focused on combating climate change does not necessarily address the social and demographic imbalances in how environmental issues affect different communities. Lastly, prioritizing wealthy individuals contradicts the core values of environmental justice, which strive for inclusivity and equity for all, not just for those who are affluent.
